The World Cup 2026 qualification has officially completed, with all 48 national teams accounted for. After an enthralling matchday of action on the final day of March 2026, and the final matchday of the international break, the dust settles with 6 new (and final) additions to the world cup roster from three different confederations.
UEFA
1. Sweden
It was a heroic performance over two matches by the Swedes, who thumped Ukraine 3-1 with a fantastic hat trick from Arsenal forward Viktor Gyökeres which was then followed with a 3-2 victory to remember against Poland with the gunner again scoring the late winner in the 88th minute to send Sweden to their first world cup in 8 years. Scrutiny arose about the legitimacy of Sweden’s participation in these qualifiers due to their lackluster initial campaign in which they went winless, but their pair of wins have shown that in quality, they are more than strong enough to participate on the world stage this summer in Group F with hosts Mexico.
2. Czechia
A nailbiter for sure for the Czechs, but a pair of victories against Ireland followed by Denmark sees them to their first world cup in 20 years. Both matches ended after 120 minutes at 2-2 but the Czechia side were able to prevail in back-to-back penalty shootouts, only missing 2 penalty attempts out of 9. Star performances from the likes of Ladislav Krejčí, who scored in both matches, and Matej Kovar who managed a total of 7 saves and 3 penalty saves over the 2 matches. Despite a dominant performance by Denmark in the final match, Czechia were resolute and showed they deserve their spot in Group A at the World Cup this summer.
3. Türkiye
Turkey were as professional as could be in the crunch time of World Cup playoff qualifiers, shutting out Romania and Kosovo back to back with 1-0 wins. Crazily enough, both games’ goals were scored in the 53rd minute and were enough to send this promising Turkish side to their first world cup in 2002, where they finished 3rd, in a remarkable campaign. The Turks dual wins have put them as huge contenders to top Group D with World Cup hosts USA this summer.
4. Bosnia & Herzegovina
The biggest upset of the qualifying cycle, Bosnia & Herzegovina make only their 2nd ever world cup with a triumph over 4-time champions Italy. The star-studded Italian team couldn’t handle the never-ending pressure from the home side and ultimately crumbled, missing out on their 3rd World Cup in a row. For all 120 minutes, Bosnia was on top and would have blown away Italy if not for Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal who pulled out legendary heroics, but not enough as Bosnia blazed through the penalty shootout with 4/4 conversions and sent themselves into Group B with hosts Canada.
Intercontinental
1. Democratic Republic of the Congo
It was a long and arduous path for the African side, but DR Congo complete the final game of qualifying with an intercontinental 1-0 win over Jamaica after 120 minutes in Mexico to secure a slot in Group K with Portugal and Colombia. Axel Tuanzebe was the shining light with a clean sheet and winning goal to send the Africans into their first World Cup in a staggering 52 years, in which they were under a completely different name; Zaire.
2. Iraq
The Lions of Mesopotamia were the final national team to fire themselves to a spot in the World Cup, beating Bolivia 2-1 after 90 minutes in Mexico. Star strikers Al-Hamadi and Hussein both netted a goal to slot the Asian side into Group I with France, Norway and Senegal; a challenge for sure. Their last appearance was 40 years ago, and this time they are hoping to shake up the impossible against the worlds best.
