EFL Cup – Grimsby Town vs. Manchester United

No-one expected Grimsby Town to put up a fight against Manchester United in the 2nd round of the EFL Cup, but they shocked the world with their performance against the Premier League side despite being 3 divisions below them. The score was Grimsby Town 2-2 Manchester United (12-11). Here are some key takeaways.

Grimsby Town deserve their victory. The amount of chances created by Grimsby Town was nothing short of amazing. They scored 2 goals in the first half in a flurry of attacking play that overwhelmed Manchester United and scored a 3rd that seemed to be wrongly called back for offside. Manchester United shifted the result with a few subs and a wonder goal by Bryan Mbeumo, but the way Grimsby town played, it put Manchester United in a situation no-one thought they would be in.

Manchester United are rotten to the core. The players on the pitch, the investment from above and the managerial decisions from even before kick off all combined to knock themselves out of the cup. The players on the pitch are evaluated at multiple hundreds of times more than Grimsby Town’s players and have talent that theoretically should be better, the start for André Onana was a grave mistake and the lack of drive to purchase a new goalkeeper put Manchester United into trouble before the whistle even blew.

Grimsby Town should celebrate their performance rather than Manchester United’s shortcomings. While the spotlight is on the embarrassment of Manchester United exiting the EFL Cup earlier than they should even be in the competition, Grimsby Town outplayed the Red Devils in every regard and their performances were the main contributor to Manchester United’s now famous loss.

Manchester United are at an all-time low. This should, on paper, be one of the most straightforward matches in Manchester United’s season and the fact they were unable to get over the line shows a shortcoming in mentality and not in quality. Some of these players are some of the best in the Premier League in their position and the fact they couldn’t do it at Grimsby Town perhaps forebodes a season of struggle.

Both of these sides have had a major turning point in their seasons. Manchester United have very few opportunities for ‘success’ left this season, and Grimsby Town have already had a positive moment to remember this season. Manchester United will have to now completely invest their efforts into FA Cup games and winning every Premier League game they can and Grimsby Town can try their best to go further in a competition that looked like they wouldn’t be able to even be relevant in whilst fighting for promotion to League One.
