CONMEBOL has just wrapped up its penultimate matchday for FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. A crucial day for a multitude of teams across the region as they faced off to settle the final three automatic qualifying positions. The first to qualify was Copa America finalists Colombia who walloped Bolivia 3-0 in a home match in Barranquilla. James kicked things off in the first half with a beautiful goal that he facilitated worked to him by Santiago Arias stepping in for Daniel Muñoz at right back. Some time after the half-time whistle, Jhon Cordoba rocketed in a strike to the top far corner from the edge of the box to make it 2-0, facilitated by a wondrous through-ball by Juan Quintero who was substituted for the captain James Rodriguez. Quintero went on to score another quality goal in the 2nd half to cap off the scoring. A wonderful performance from the Cafeteros who didn’t hold back to qualify to their first World Cup in eight years. Uruguay also handled business, slotting 3 goals past Peru at home to secure their spot in World Cup 2026. An early statement goal from Rodrigo Aguirre put them on the right foot from the 14th minute. They then strengthened their lead with a goal from Giorgian De Arrascaeta and later, Federico Vinas who came on in the 2nd half to make it 3-0. Finally, Paraguay found a hard-fought 0-0 home draw with Ecuador to strap down their place at next years’ World Cup. For the final matchday, the intercontinental playoff spot is up for grabs between Venezuela, eyeing their first ever World Cup appearance, and Bolivia, hoping to return after a long absence in the competition.
